My rantings on art style…

Screen shot 2009-11-27 at 10.38.44 PM

I was doing some sketches in illustrator the other day using my wacom tablet and various brushes to obtain a traditional ink styled technique.  I got to thinking… yeah, scary… with the last drawings I’ve been doing and some series stuff I’ve been working on I’ve been mostly focusing on style.  To me, an art style is the personality of the piece – wether it’s fun or realistic. I’ve gotten a comment from a view of my deviant account “You have a really fun style.” … and honestly, I like having a ‘fun’ style!  That’s why I do this, to make people smile, smirk, or just enjoy what they see when they’re gazing at my creations. I’ve come to a crossroads on my style. I like doing everything from realistic to simplified  cartoonistic … so what’s my ‘real’ style? All the artwork I look at from successful artists keep within their style.  It seems to work for them but I couldn’t imagine picking one or the other.  Or do artists have a certain style because that’s all they know?  From my illustrator drawing you can see the random styles.  I guess the important thing is to do what is fun and keep it fun…  this isn’t my day job so I guess I don’t have to worry about style all that much.  For those artists I follow and have that certain style… that’s why I follow you and like your work, because of your individual style, so thank you and keep up the good work!

New Site Finished! – Social Denim

social denim

Local Business, Social Denim, has just launched their site! The photography in the site was done by Jason Hardesty.  And content and client relations by Michelle Woodyear.  Web Design and structure done by me!  Thanks to Katie Stream for modeling for the majority of the photography.  Thanks Juli for giving me the job!

Social Denim in Lake Charles caters to an audience that lusts over this season’s must haves but remains timid in the midst of the unapologetically harsh fashion world. If you crave the style of the fashion capitals without the snarky attitude- you’ve found your safe haven!

Some Finished Paintings…

I just finished a couple of paintings and just gloss varnished them.  I worked on the scenic view last month and waited for it to dry before varnishing.  The acrylic was completed within the week. Enjoy!

Pitt Grill Website – In Development

Here is the first proof for the website in development

Here is the first proof for the website in development

I’m currently working on a new site for the classic restaurant – Pitt Grill. Since there is a nostalgic feeling with the name I figured I do some what of an old paper menu look with main body area, add in a diner notebook to take down the orders. I kept with the red-orange-yellow palette because these colors induce hunger. I like how the dark teals and tans along with the deep burgundy all came together… it reminds me of a simpler time. :)

Here’s the sketch…

Finished the White Lantern

The White Lantern

THE CONCEPT & INSPIRATION: I just got finished reading about 5 comics from the blackest night series. So, not only do i feel inspired to draw some rad comic hero but I want to integrate something from the green lantern universe. My imagination has wondered enough so I think I’m ready to put pencil to paper.

A little history about the subject of my drawing: the lantern universe has different color rings, some good, some bad. The badest of the bad is the black rings. The story that I’m reading now is hinting that it will take all the light of the various rings to fight back the black ring darkness.

The concept:
1.) draw some sort of battle between a green lantern and a black lantern
2.) come up with my own green lantern character
3.) since all colors of light make white – then why not create a whole new lantern color – the white lantern!
4.) let’s get started…

The white lantern:
Since all colors converge to one point to make white then I think there should only be one white lantern. The white lantern should be a celestial being that is mysterious and alien… But not scary. So I’m going for something like an alien-priest that kills black rings with his ubber white light.

Here’s the process step by step:
